Clarenville, Bell Island and St. Johns Event: Katimavik will be teaming up with the East Coast Trail Association to clean up a The Freshwater Bay section of the East Coast Trail. Afterwards we will head back to the St. John's Katimavik house for a B-B-Q and entertainment which will include music, hula hooping and juggling. Peace River Event: The participants are partnering with our work partner for this event. The Springfield primary school will have an environmental day on behalf of the Katimavik 30th anniversary. The participants and students are planning to plant trees around the playground. At the end of the day, they will be hosting a BBQ with the students, parents, work partners and the community at large. Grande Prairie Event: The Grande Prairie group is planning a garbage cleanup in and around the city. The participants will be partnering with the City of Grande Prairie regarding this event. North Battleford Event: The North Battleford group will be planting trees for a maze at the local museum. They are partnering with the North Battleford Arts Museum. Saskatoon Event: The group will be having an environmental fair at the École Canadianne Française. They will have a number of booths that will focus on how to better protect the environment. Prince Albert Event: The Katimavik group in Northern Saskatchewan will be celebrating at the River Front in Prince Albert as part of a community wide celebration, welcoming the David Thompson's Brigade on May 24th 2008. They will be presenting 100 percent recycled fleece blankets to a representative of Family Futures, a non-profit organization who works with single mothers and their newborns. It will be a day of fun with guitars, juggling, food and laughter as we celebrate 30 years of Katimavik youth volunteer services all across Canada. Moose Jaw Event: To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Katimavik, the Moose Jaw group will be presenting an environmental focused movie in a community park. The group is also planning to host a BBQ at the same local. The objective of this event is to bring people together in order to raise awareness of environmental issues and get the public to become more aware of issues that we commonly face. Gravelbourg Event: On May 24th at a park in downtown Gravelbourg the group will be having a BBQ for the community along with performances by local musicians. There will also be face painting for kids and games. Local officials will be invited to attend. The main concept of the day is to have a “Make your own cloth bag” workshop from donated clothing and have a presentation by the group on eco-friendliness and express how easy it would be for Gravelbourg to ban plastic bags. The ultimate goal is to eliminate plastic bags in Gravelbourg by helping the community make their own re-usable bags and giving out bags pre-made by the group. Weyburn Event: The group will have an Environmental Family Fun Day at the River Park. There will be a BBQ serving both meat and vegetarian alternatives. A large part of the day will be to inform people about the environment and ways that people can reduce their impact on the environment. There will be entertainment along with face painting for children. The group is also planning on selling reusable bags and donating the profit to Ducks Unlimited. Manitoba clusters Événement : Les 6 groupes du Manitoba (Ste.Anne, Steinbach, Stonewall, St.Boniface (Winnipeg), Minnedosa et Neepawa) ainsi que de nombreux anciens de Katimavik, amis du programme et résidents du quartier « Spence » de Winnipeg participeront à une journée de bénévolat en partnenariat avec « Spence Neighbourhood Association » pour revitaliser les jardins communautaires et parcs de ce quartier. Il y aura ainsi beaucoup de jardinage, de nettoyage, construction de table à picnic, peinture de clôtures, de l'animation pour les enfants, et le tout sera suivi d'un buffet (type barbecue) tout en écoutant et observant les performances de musiciens, artistes locaux et participants/anciens de Katimavik. Vermilion Event: Since a number of trees at the Vermilion provincial Park were removed to make way for a new power line, the community received a grant from the government to buy saplings to replace the trees. Vernon Event: The Vernon Katimavik group will host an educational event to promote awareness of environmental issues surrounding food. The documentary Film “Hijacked Future” which focuses on food production and shortages will be screened with a discussion period following each viewing. Included in the free admission to the Science centre for this event, families can also take in the environmentally friendly crafts area and BBQ.
