Located on the island with the same name, in the northeast of the province, Lamèque was first inhabited by the Micmacs. The deportation of the Acadians brought the first wave of white settlers. This mainly French-speaking city now has a population of 8,000, most of whom trace their heritage back to these first Acadian families. Also, the city calls itself “the provincial capital of peat moss.” This industry, the second most important after fishing, gives its name to the Peat Moss Festival, where many recreational and cultural activities take place. The city also hosts the International Baroque Music Festival, which attracts numerous music lovers each year. http://www.lameque.ca/
