The bilingual area of Chéticamp, located on the west side of Cape Breton, has a substantial French-speaking community which originated with the Deportation. Sent away from their own land, the Acadians sought refuge in the area around 1785 and made their living mainly from fishing. On the Cabot Trail, you can watch whales from the coast or go deep-sea fishing. Chéticamp has more than 6,000 residents.
