Inverness has a population of 1,702 inhabitants and is situated on the western or sunset side of the picturesque Cape Breton Island. It recently celebrated its 201st anniversary in 2004. Inverness got its name because most its inhabitants were from Scotland, especially Inverness-shire, and it was felt that they should adopt a Scottish name to honour their homeland. The area's economic growth started with the opening of a coal mine in 1890. Several more mines opened in and near Inverness during the early 20th century, but all were closed by 1958. Main industries today include fishing and tourism. Inverness is home to a beautiful beach that runs along the town’s entire length, along with a boardwalk that takes visitors on a tour of the coastline where one might spot pilot whales, schools of tuna and breathtaking sunsets.
