Elliot Lake is a city in northeastern Ontario, north of Lake Huron, midway between Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie. The city was originally a mining community, which boomed after 1955, when uranium was found and used to supply American military demand. The city has experienced several boom and bust cycles over the decades due to the instability of this main mining resource. The population peaked at 26,000 in 1960 and today there are approximately 12,000 inhabitants, including a large Franco-Ontarian population. Since the closure of most of its mines, the city has begun to promote itself as a retirement community and tourist destination. Elliot Lake is surrounded by more than 4,000 lakes, so the opportunities for fishing are endless. Expect to catch several species of trout, bass, pickerel and sturgeon.http://www.cityofelliotlake.com
