Castlegar, with a population of 7,755 inhabitants, is centrally located in the Southern Interior of British Columbia. The City is 600 kilometres from both Vancouver and Calgary, on the southern tip of the Arrow Lakes chain, and at the confluence of the Kootenay and Columbia Rivers. The surrounding lakes and mountains offer unlimited outdoor possibilities, such as fishing, boating, sailing, hiking, biking and cross-country skiing. The city is home to many of British Columbia's Doukhobors, a pacifist group of political refugees from Russia, who settled in the Ootichena Valley in 1908. Their history has now become part of the attraction of Castlegar, as many visitors come to see the Zuckerberg Island Heritage Park, the Russian Orthodox Chapel House and similar sites. Today, Castlegar reflects a vibrant mix of commerce, industry and recreation.
