The capital and largest city in Newfoundland & Labrador, St. John’s is located on the eastern side of the Avalon Peninsula of southeast Newfoundland. It is one of the oldest cities in North America; cradled in a harbour carved from granite and surrounded by hills leading to the ocean. England’s first overseas colony, today it has a population close to 100,000 inhabitants. Many of St. John’s earliest settlers came from southeast Ireland, primarily Waterford, Wexford and Kilkenny. These origins can still be detected in similarities between accents from that part of Ireland and the traditional St. John's accent. Its strategic geographical location at the centre of the English migratory fishery on the Grand Banks has made St-John’s a haven for both Canadian & European fishermen. The economy is tied to what lies beneath the Atlantic Ocean - oil and gas - as well as what swims in or travels across it.
