Avondale, with a population of 951 inhabitants, is a quiet, beautiful and scenic community located in the southern part of Conception Bay. The town, about 37 miles from St. John’s, was named for Avondale, Ireland. It is a lumbering, fishing and farming settlement, boasting a post office, a church and a railway station, which was shut down after the closure of Newfoundland’s railway in the 1980’s. It now houses two museums: the community museum and the railway museum. There is a fully operating mini-train that takes visitors around the narrow gauge track. The Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador declared the station a registered Heritage Structure in February 1988.
