Carleton Place, population 9,600, is a town in eastern Ontario about a half hour west of Ottawa, on the banks of the scenic Mississippi River. The town is named after a street in Glasgow, Scotland, “Carlton Place”, but the spelling was altered in 1829. Both textile and lumber mills flourished in Carleton Place, but none are still operating. Today, the old mill buildings have been turned into condominiums and are also used for the town’s growing “high tech” industry. The town offers a wide variety of sports and recreation activities, including a double surface arena, soccer fields, various parks, as well as many natural areas to hike and explore. If the town’s history interests you, then the Heritage Walk Tour allows you to visit residences ranging from original log cabins to stately homes. Carleton Place perfectly blends the old with the new.
