Located 150 km north of Victoria, it has a population of 11,250 residents. Parksville depends primarily on tourism; it is a popular summer resort with beautiful sandy beaches and excellent saltwater and freshwater fishing. On low tide days, the ocean recedes for hundreds of metres, leaving the hard sandy beaches exposed for beachcombing and sandcastle building. The Parksville area sponsors a Sandcastle Competition drawing builders from around the world. Another popular event is the annual Brant Wildlife Festival held on the beaches around Parksville and neighbouring Qualicum, celebrating the migration of up to 20,000 Brant geese from Mexico to their Alaskan breeding grounds.
