New Westminster, named by Queen Victoria, was first a destination on the gold road, then the first capital of British Columbia. It is located 20 km east of Vancouver and overlooks the Fraser River. The downtown section of New Westminster, with its sloping streets, waterfront views and historic buildings from the Victorian and Edwardian eras, reminds one of San Francisco. Burnaby's population is estimated at 200,000 and New Westminster at over 54,000, both of which are English-speaking.
